The three fictions emphasise that it is precisely these three fictions – the democratic, legal and economic fictions – that form the basis of the illusion we all live in.

If one attempts to describe the illusory state we all find ourselves in when it comes to understanding our own country and our own role as citizens of that country, one needs some stepping stones. These stepping stones should help the reader cross the enormous river that symbolises the colossal mental journey that the majority must undoubtedly embark on, as dry-footed as possible. Democracy, legal rights and economics are concepts that most people understand very well. And most Swedes are probably well aware that these three areas are interrelated on a larger national – and international – level, even though at first glance the topics seem very different.

These three areas are central to the perception that the majority of the Danish and Swedish populations have of countries such as Denmark and Sweden: that we (regardless of country) have the world's best and most infallible democracy; that the special Danish/Swedish sense of justice contributes to creating more peace in the world; that the Danish/Swedish national economy is as healthy as a country's economy can be; and that Denmark/Sweden is simply the world's leading country, especially in terms of civil rights and human rights. It is precisely here, in these unfortunately erroneous assumptions, that the illusion is most evident.

Flemming will describe each of the three fictions with easy-to-understand examples, so that after this presentation you will at least have a general overview of the illusion you are living in.
